WHAT IS PRESBYOPIA?
With age, your eye’s lens grows more and more inflexible, decreasing your ability to focus on close objects. The clinical term for this is presbyopia.
Presbyopia in Greek means “old eye.” Presbyopia usually begins to develop for most people around the age 40.
A common sign of presbyopia is that you’ll find that the natural lenses and surrounding parts of your eyes have grown too rigid to accommodate focus from far to near — and back again.
This inability to see sharp images at all distances are natural – but a natural part of the aging process.
The following is a list of interesting facts you need to know about Presbyopia:
1. There isn’t any perfect treatment to prevent presbyopia yet.
The simple reality is that with age, comes tear of your body. Your eyes are no different. But there are proactive things you can do to prevent presbyopia from happening to you:
• You could undergo a surgical procedure such as LASIK to and have one eye corrected for distance vision and the other eye corrected for near vision.
• You also can choose to wear contact lenses for monovisio (as a long-term solution instead of surgery) if you prefer not to wear bifocal or multifocal contact lenses.
2. You Can Do Eye Exercises
There isn’t any cure but there are preventive eye exercises you can do to keep your eyes in health.
There is no harm in trying these eye exercises if you do not have any eye conditions that will be aggravated by prolonged use of your eyes.
But if you have serious eye conditions like cataracts, blindness in one or both eyes, or a recovering cornea injury, avoid doing these exercises.
The following is a list of relevant Eye Exercises:
• Massage your eyes : This will help to improve blood circulation around your eyes and face, and prepare your eyes for exercise
• Strengthen your eyes’ near and far focusing. This exercise will strengthen the muscles in your eyes and help you maintain your current vision level.
• Make a figure eight with your eyes. This is a great exercise to practice controlling the physical movement of your eyes.
• Practice rhythmic eye movements. These movements can help to strengthen your eyes and your hand-eye coordination.
